Abandoned village of Eòrasdail on the island of Vatersay in the Outer Hebrides with Sgeir a' Chlogaid rocks in background.

In 1906 a group of landless men from Barra, who became known as the Vatersay Raiders seized land on the neighbouring island of Vatersay. They were eventually sent to Edinburgh for trial where they received two-month prison sentences. Their case resulted in so much public sympathy however that the Congested District Board was prompted to buy the island from its owner, Lady Gordon Cathcart, who was not thought to have been a good landlord, and divide it into 58 crofts. In 1912 the last inhabitants of Mingulay left their island as it became unsustainable and settled on Vatersay. The village of Eòrasdail was established at this time although it has been abandoned since the 1970s.
