Cultivated exotics, such as our common bulbs,snowdrops, squills, hyacinths, &c., might be introduced in open spaces OF RURAL AFFAIRS. 329 along the borders of the more dense portions of the wild shrubbery. Ifthese were properly introduced, they would lose all the artificial appear-ance too often given them, and become an essential component partof the wild scenery, and their ornamental effect be thus greatly in-creased. For such a garden to give the best effect, it is almost essential that thesurface be more or less uneven, and a small ravine, with some rocks, wouldbe a valuable addition. A stream of water lined with ferns and waterplants, would add still farther to its charms. A narrow, curved gravel-walk, kept smooth and in perfect finish, would not be discordant with thegeneral effect; it would be the only artificial part of the grounds thatcould be admitted.
