The Karekare coast and beach offer spectacular views and wild wooded walks. The Hillary Trail runs along this cliff top. The sand is black on the beach and the waves are popular with surfers. The area is part of a national park which keeps the wilderness intact.

The Hillary Trail has recently opened along this coastal path. It is named after a local man Sir Edmund Hilary who climbed Mount Everest as the first person to do so. There is an amazing range of plant life to be seen.
