Methods of early Christian missionary work . out as practically the only story ofits kind, for it brought to the Hebrews a new message, amessage of a God of the whole world, and not or only onepeople. Christ, though filled with a love for allmen, and witn a mission for the conversion of all theworld, spent his life among the Jews and tried to bringthem to a realization of tne divine in life. It was notuntil the death of Christ, that a definite change apostles received their impetus for going to people ofother countries direct from tneir Master. It was thelittle number of disciples that gathered on the mountainwhom he told to go into all the world and preach thegospel to every creature, and to be his witnessesboth in Jerusalem, in all Judea, and in Samaria, andunto the uttermost parts of the earth. With these commands, backed by the promises Lo I am with you alway,3 and Greater works than these shall ye do,4 the disciples left their own homes and —oooo— 1. Mattnew £8:19 3. Matthew 28:20 2. Acts 1:8 4. John 14:12. -4- traveled to other people. It was only this handfulof Jews who knew the Christ, so small a number that thenations of that day did not fear them, and the Romanphilosophers treated lightly the tales that circulatedabout them. It is an interesting story to read howthese men gathered their little congregations, not fromheathen homes, but from civilized people, and arguedthe position of tneir Christ; and to read of Paul as hedared to stand before Athens itself ana call the peopleof that city to worship the true God. The result of the work of the apostles wasthe formation of little individual congregations ofworshipers, some of whom remained true to their newfaith, while others fell again into xneir old many, the gospel soon lost its broad and wide messageof love, and became a gospel of fear. The death ofChrist was such as demanded of them, no more the sacrific-ing of animals; but rather, the sacrificing of their ownlives in penance f
