A late 19th Century illustration of the Russian fleet under full sail. The modern Russian Navy was created at the initiative of Peter the Great and expanded iunder Catherine the Great resulting in the establishment of the Black Sea Fleet, with its bases in Sevastopol (1783) and Kherson. It was at that time that Russian warships started to venture into the Mediterranean on a regular basis.
