Note this total includes deepwater areas such as lakes and river channels, which provide critical aquatic habitat and other valuable ecosystem services but are not considered wetlands. By system, the majority (82) of the mapped acres are palustrine, or freshwater, wetlands (Figure 9). By class, freshwater emergent wetlands make up the majority (63) of wetland acres (Figure 10). By water regime, temporarily and seasonally flooded wetlands are the most common (Figure 11). These wetlands typically have surface water a few days or weeks during the growing season but dry down later in the season. Only 5 of wetlands have wetter regimes, such as semipermanently flooded and intermittently exposed. The permanently flooded regime is used only for lakes and rivers. By hydrogeomorphic class, riverine wetlands make up the largest proportion of wetlands, followed by depressional wetlands (Figure 12). â Lacustrine â Palustrine b Riverine Figure 9.
