The peaceful protest which was aimed at raising awareness of the plight of Malta's 2,000-strong African community said the lack of refugee status and citizenship rights had left many in an impossible "limbo" unable to travel, open bank accounts, make remittances home or in many cases even just get a job to survive. Worse still, others had become victims of exploitation, racial abuse and even violent attacks, it said, contributing to a very high number of suicides. "We've had four cases (of suicide) in the past five months. People are killing themselves here," said Ahmed Nuur Ibrahim, a Somali journalist whose NGO African Media Association Malta, organised the protest. @ Adam Alexander/Alamy News Live
