AMEiiic.\N : — What is the best -width to build a house for lettuce and would you advise solid beds or raised benches? I am 30 feet above surface water with a gravel subsoil. I am figuring on using hot water and wish you would kindly state the ratio of pipe to glass surface or any other information that you may deem necessary. J. H. It is not possible to give a definite answer to this inquiry, as the widths of greenhouses should vary with the length. Thus for a small house a width of 10 feet might be best, while it to be 50 feet long it will be better to have a width of 20 feet. For a length of 100 feet to 150 a width of about 28 feet answers very well, and for still longer houses, widths of 36, 50 and even 75 feet might be used. For houses of 20 feet or less it will generally be best to have the beds somewhat raised, but whether to be benches of slightly raised beds with wooden or, better yet, cement sides will depend upon conditions. For all large and wide houses there is no occasion for having the beds raised at all. The amount of radiation required in a lettuce house will depend, of course, upon the outside tentperature, but where it does not go more than 10°-15° below zero it will be found ftitisfactory to
