Biscuit tin commemorating the coronation in May 1937 of King George VI featuring a relief illustration in gold of the King and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother on its lid. Albert Frederick Arthur George Windsor succeeded his elder brother Edward VIII in 1936 after Edward abdicated in order to marry Wallis Simpson. George had married Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon in 1923. He was known as the reluctant King because of his dread of public speaking due to a bad stammer which was cured by Australian Lionel Logue. George died in 1952 to be succeeded by his eldest daughter Elizabeth who became Elizabeth II. The tin was from manufacturer Crawfords. The biscuit manufacturer William Crawford and Sons Ltd began in Leith, Edinburgh in 1813 and eventually became part of United Biscuits - a vintage nineteen thirties item for editorial use only.
