Sowing Grass Seed.—Very light, chaffy seed, such as those of brome grass, especially the im-portant seed and awnedseed, such as those oftall meadow oat grass,do not feed throughseeding machines satis-factorily, and shouldtherefore, be sown byhand. Hand sowingshould always be donewhen the air is as stillas possible. It is well-nigh impossible to dis-tribute the seed evenlywhen the wind is blow-ing. Unless the soweris decidedly expert, it isbest to sow half of theseed at a time, makingthe second sowing cross-wise to the first. This. MEADOW FOXTAIL A hardy perennial grassmuch like timothy in appear-ance. Its chief value is inmixtures for permanent pas-tures and meadows. It is sel-dom grown alone. For nutri-tiveness it is about at a parwith timothy. It fancies richsoils and is best known in theMiddle and New Englandstates. msures a more evenstand. For such seedas will feed throughit, like timothy, red-top (recleaned,) clovers, and others that aresmall, round and clean, the wheelbarrow seeder isthe most satisfactory implement yet invented.
