The portable outfit should be valuable in repairing partsof machines in place when these parts are too bulky, incon-venient, or otherwise impractical to move, and for doingroutine welding of all sorts, such as filling holes in castings, welding seams in pipes or tanks, or other work of a similarnature. Besides the saving in time and trouble due to theportability of the outfit, its use will save both time andmaterial in welding. The electrode is fed continuously, the number of inter-ruptions are reduced and less skill is required by the oper- ator to make a good weld than is the case with ordinaryhand welding. Material is saved by eliminating the wasteends which usually amount to at least ten per cent of thetotal amount of electrode wire The Set Can Be Used Wherever Welding Current Is Available Novel Motor Drive tor Tool Room Lathe AN unusually interesting feature of the new 14-in. toolroom lathe, developed by the Hendey Machine Com-pany, Torrington, Conn., is the location of the drivingmotor under the oil pan as shown in the illustration. Thisis one of the most compact arrangements that it would bepossible to devise, the lathe notrequiring any additional headroom or floor space due to thefact of its being motor lathe retains the desirablefeatures of tlie cone type latheand most of the advantages of thegear-type. Half of the spindlespeeds are obtained through beltdrives, an arrangement tending toprovide flexibility, power andrigidity. All motive parts of the latheexcepting the lead screw and faceplate are enclosed. In construc-tion, the lathe is a combination ofreadily accessible and generallyindependent units. The motor iseasily reached or moved and doesnot obstruct light an
