The little mantelet & fichus of mousseline covered theshoulders. UNDER LOUIS XVI The young Queen Marie-Antoinette gave to the Courta most incredible example in fashions which she adored. Her inclination for rustic tastes, & her whim to playthe milkmaid in the little hamlet at Versailles, made thevogue for very soft & light materials. At no other epochhas a womans costume had so little weight & so greatvolume. Marie-Antoinette also introduced the most curiouscoiffures & the mode of wearing plumes in the hair, sothat it was said that to see her in the galleries at Versaillesamid her dames dhonneur was to see only a forest ofwaving plumes. Toward the end of her reign the paniers disappeared& were replaced by postiches with ribbons & flowers. The close-fitting corsage & the long waist were kept.
