Will you kindly advise me whether or not I can successfully use an oil burner in a high-pressure 40-hor8epower tubu- lar boiler! The boiler is a Brownell and when using coal we carry fifteen pounds of steam. What kind of oil burner would you advise and where can I get one? I wish to heat about 15,000 feet of glass. My fire box is 3x5 feet. What kind of fuel oil is it advisable to use* D. C. F. C—Kan. An oil-burner equipment may be ap- plied to any type of boiler with a great degree of success and economy, provid- ed care is used in properly constructing the checkerwork in the combustion chamber of the boiler. The cut below shows the interior of the combustion chamber of a boiler after the necessary changes have been made to convert the boiler from burning coal to the use of oil as fuel. The grates of the boiler are covered with bricks, as shown in the illustration, which in turn are covered with fire clay built up in such a manner as to deflect the blast flames, break them up, and carry them over the baffle wall or checkerwork. The natural draft will carry the flame well on to the rear of the boiler. In this way the intense heat produced will not be concentrated in any one place in the fire box, and a long flame is produced, giving a more evenly distributed heat and eliminating all danger of burning out any of the steel or iron surfaces within the boiler. The most satisfactory fuel is found in fuel oil. The cost is lower than that of any of the other grades, and at the same time it has a higher calorific value. A higli efllciciicy is reached by atomizing the oil at the nozzle by compressed air, and spraying it over a gas flame. In this way no carbon is formed on the burner, absol
