A Scene from the Comedy Hopman Ulrich of de bedrogen Gierigheid (Captain Ulrich or Greed Deceived) Cornelius Troost (1696-1750) pastel and gouache, 1745. Many comedies and farces that Troost depicted revolve around love and adultery. Here, Joris, the servant of Captain Ulrich, accepts a bribe from Godefroy, the lover of Ulrich's wife Sybille. The captain suspects his wife of cheating, which explains why the door is being guarded. Ulrich himself was no better. He married Sybille for her money while she was carrying the child of a nobleman. So the cheater was himself cheated.
