In r854he was chosen Regent of the University in place ofAndrew Parsons, who had resigned the office abouta year before. He thus served nearly four yearsand took a prominent i^art in the proceedings of theBoard. He was Chaplain of the Thirteenth Michi-gan Infantry from January to December, 1862. In1873 he resigned the pastorate of the first Presby-terian church at Flint and from that time on livedin comparative retirement. He died at Flint, Feb-ruary 25, BENJAMIN LEVI BAXTER was born atSidney Plains, Delaware County, New York, April 7,1815. In 1831 his father removed to Tecumseh,Michigan. Here the son completed his preparationfor Dartmouth College, where he studied threeyears. In 1843 he returned to Michigan to takecharge of the Tecumseh Branch of the State Univer- BENJAMIN LEVI BAXTER that continued twenty-five years. He was a Regentof the University from 1858 to 1S64. From 1869to 1871 he was a Representative in the State Legis-lature. He died at Tecumseh, Michigan, June 10,1902. JAMES EASTMAN JOHNSON was bornin 1805. He was admitted to the Bar of St. JosephCounty, Michigan, in 1837, and practised his profes-sion there over half a century. In 1857 he waselected Regent of the University from the SecondJudicial Circuit and served the full term of six yearsfrom January i, following.
