StNicholas [serial] . FIG. I. A FLEET OF BUTTER-DISH BOATS. and the tar candle wax Figure 2 shows whereto calk. Cut strips of not too stiff wrapping-paperabout one and a half inches wide and paste themacross the two bottom ends and down the side the cracks where the wood laps at the ends, andentirely covering the calking. The object is tomake a complete wax coating over the outsideof the boat so that the water can not penetrate 256 BUTTER-DISH TOYS 257 through the thin wood or leak through the photograph (Fig. 6) shows the water-tightboat floating in a dish of FIG. 2. CALKING THE BOTTOM. Choose a slender stick six or seven inches longfor the mast. It will depend upon the size of theboat how high you should have the mast, but itmust not be so high as to make the boat top-heavy. From a sheet of unruled writing-papercut the sail (Fig. 3) and make it high enoughfor the peak (A, Fig. 3), to reach almost tothe top of the mast, and the bottom long enoughto extend two inches over the stern of the bottom edge of the sail must just escape thetop edge of the boat. Cover the flap on the up-right edge of the sail with, paste, lay the mastdown along the dotted line (Fig. 3), fold theflap over, inclosing the mast, and paste downflat (Fig. 4). Use a buttonhole-twist spool tohold your mast upright. Wrap a strip of paperaround the bottom of the mast, cover the outsideof the paper roll with glue, and push it down intothe hole in the spool. This will keep it steady.
