The early 1900s caption reads: "HENRY I. OF GERMANY VISITING CHARLES THE SIMPLE.—This Charles the Simple was one of the degenerate Carolingian kings of France. The rule of a rich province was in dispute between France and Germany, and the clever German king arranged a meeting at which he so flattered, pleased, and convinced Charles that the latter gave him the province and his friendship as well.” Charles III, called the Simple or the Straightforward, was the king of West Francia from 898 until 922 and the king of Lotharingia from 911 until 919–923. He was a member of the Carolingian dynasty.
