SAAB Gripe climbing steeply away after right twist
The JAS39 SAAB Gripen climbing steeply away from a slow pass left to right during its air display at the Farnborough International Airshow 2006 with white vapour trail performing a right roll. A multi role combat aircraft developed over three previous generations of airframe now replacing the Draken and Viggen variants this aircraft is a collaboration of SAAB Ericson Volvo and Celsius Aerotech . BAe Systems jointly markets the Grippen following a marketing agreement several years ago . It can be equipped with a range if European produced armament including AIM AMRAAM and sidewinder missiles . Approximate weight 6500 kilogrammes max takeoff weight 12500 kilogrammes . Engines Volvo Aero RM 12 or optionally General Electric F404J . Thrust 80 KiloNewtons or 18000 Pounds . Maximum speed above supersonic at low altitude and about mach 2 at high altitude. With this power and speed it can climb to 45000 feet or 14 Kilometres altitude in about 3 minutes which is an exciting performance to watch . The forward winglets can rotate giving it excellent manoevrability in the air and good low speed performance without the complication of a swing wing .
