From this we moved to great Kanyeny^, crossing a plain studded with baobab-trees, and at a ziwa we noticed a line herd of cattle being watered. The country was almost wholly under cultivation, and numerous tembes were passed on this march. At the entrance to one we noticed many peoj^le suffering from small-pox — the first instance, since leaving the coast, we had seen of this fell disease, which at times sweeps like a devouring fire throughout large portions of Africa.
