Operation Deep Freeze I - Bow of Icebreaker Eastwind. Forced by two stern propellers, the U. S. Coast Guard icebreaker Eastwind's mighty bow climbed up onto solid ice 15 to 20 ft. thick in McMurdo Sound. The weight of her 6,515 tons smashing down scattered ice chunks in all direction. Here the icebreaker is sliding back down off the ice with a rocking motion to shake her loose after one of these climbs. By reposting these staggering blows the Eastwind cut a channel 36 miles in length through which she carried cargo to within 4 miles of Hut Point base, Ross Island. February 27, 956.
