Granite sculpture young soldier 'Taking the Oath', Spanish-American war memorial, Capitol Avenue, Cheyenne, Wyoming, USA

A granite sculpture, dating to 1899, of a young soldier standing on a four sided flaring base. The figure stands with legs together, left hand holding hat over heart and right hand raised as if to swear oath. The military figure has a high collared, hip-length jacket, trousers and knee-high boots. The Spanish-American War lasted for ten weeks in 1898. It involved fighting between The United States and Spain in both the Pacific and Cuba. At the end of the war Spain ceded Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines to the United States.
