Jedburgh Scottish Borders town UK crawstep gables and the Mercat Cross

Jedburgh, Scotland, market square and Mercat Cross (2005). The building on the left has three newly converted (2007) apartments above the level of the ground floor shop. It is made of local sandstone, and the style is Scottish Baronial. The jagged edge on the roofline is known as a crawstep gable, or 'crow stepped' in English, and the chimney is supported on a buttress styled to resemble a bartizan tower (overhanging corner tower). Mercat is Scottish for 'market'.
