Beekeeper and brood comb. The beekeeper is pointing to a young bee, which has developed from one of the larvae contained in this comb. The queen bee lays an egg in each hexagonal cell. The larva hatches after three days, and then sealed in its cell on day nine. The adult worker bee emerges after 22 days. Bees collect nectar from a wide range of flowering plants, bringing it back to their hive to store it and form honey (seen at the corners of this comb). The honey is used as food by bee larva, and is also collected by beekeepers for human consumption. The most commonly domesticated bee is the common honey bee (Apis mellifera).
