High-angle view of the famous Church of St Peter on the rocky spur overlooking the Bay of Lord Byron, Porto Venere, La Spezia, Liguria, Italy
Built on the rocky spur at the end of the fishing village overlooking the open sea, the Church of St Peter was founded on the ancient remains of the pagan temple dedicated to the goddess Venus (5th century). The first Romanesque architecture (1198) was succeeded by the Gothic part with the decoration of black and white bands that dates back to the 13th century and was built by the Republic of Genoa.
