As the community grows and more valuesare created, more and more people have established credit, or are in a position to give the necessarysecurity to obtain the loanable funds of the banks. With the funds thus secur-ed factories are estab-ished, lands are brought under cultivation, mines exploited and the general forward movementgoes on. In a country so rich in natural resources, and many of them of such enormous extent, it isabsolutely necessary to obtain outside capital to assist or make possible the earliest CALIFORNIA NATIONAL BANK—HOME OF THE SUTTER CLUB As the smaller places in the Valley look to Sacramento, so does Sacramento look to other places. Ifthe undertaking is too large for the available capital here to undertake, San Francisco, as the nextnearer and larger center, would be appealed to. If San Francisco has something too large for theiravailable capital, Chicago, New York, or other large and potent financial centers would be calledupon, and, thus the movement goes on, each center acting within the scope of its own once the enterprise is under way, the values created stay and assist in the general upbuilding.
