Woman lighting a candle at the fiesta de la Virgen de la Soledad Oaxaca Mexico

The festival of the Virgin of Solitude (La Virgen de la Soledad) the patron saint of Oaxaca is celebrated on December 18. Legend has it that in 1620 a mule train camped outside the city found an extra mule that refused to move and on prodding rolled on its side and died. A pack that it was carrying contained a statue of the Virgin of Soledad, so the people of Oaxaca built a shrine, then a church and finally the basilica that stands today, on the spot where the statue was found.
