It is embarrassingsometimes to have this occur at the table. In regard to the treatment of this condition I have cometo the conclusion, from numerous consultations with sur-geons, that the only remedy is to perform an operation uponthe seat of trouble and remove the piece of bone that causes thepressure upon the nerve trunk. The pressure is caused by the fractured pieces of bone be-coming calcified in the position which they assumed at thetime of the injury. I have not had any desire to undergo an operation, as Iam used to it now. I do not think electricity, massage, or anyother treatment, would give beneficial results. I would beglad to try any reasonable suggestions that may come to yournotice and report SOME USEFUL REMEDIES. In the communication under the above title, II. W. discusses, among other agents, cocain phenate anda preparation which he designates as zinc iodid. Cocainphenate is prepared by adding to a small quantity of carbolic-acid an ecpial volume of crystals of cocain hydrochlorid. Assoon as the latter are dissolved more cocaine is added, untilthe carbolic acid is saturated. Some undissolved cocain crys-tals should remain at the bottom of the container, while thesupernatant liquid should be perfectly clear, and of a thicksyrupy consistence. Cocain phenate may be used to advantage as an applica-tion under the gum before removing deep-seated calculi fromthe roots of teeth affected by pyorrhea; as an application to re-lieve the pain caused by the entrance into the mucous tissues ofa hypodermic needle; for the relief of pulpitis; to relieve thesensitivity of pulp remnants after partial extirpation under ar-senic; in the treatment of post-extract
