River gorge. Folded rock strata by the River Suze, in the Jura mountains. The Jura is a young mountain range near the Swiss-German border. This gorge, known as the Taubenlochschlucht gorge, formed because the river eroded the mountains at a faster rate than they were created. A river that is in existence before mountains that later surround it is known as an antecedent river.
