The Marlboro Man depicted by cowboys like this one on an outdoor sign in the USA was introduced in 1954 to promote smoking of filtered cigarettes.

The Marlboro Man as depicted by masculine cowboys like this one on an outdoor sign in Miami, Florida, was introduced by a tobacco company's advertising firm in 1954 to promote filtered cigarettes that had been mostly smoked by women. Thanks to the ad campaign, Marlboro became the best-selling cigarette brand in the world by 1972. The company ended its Marlboro Man advertising in the USA in 1999 and has since phased out the iconic cowboy image in most other countries as well. Photographed in 1983.
