No daughter of St. Marys could be morefitted than Dr. McVea to bring such a message on theoccasion of the seventy-fifth anniversary—coming toSt. Marys the first year of Dr. Bennett Smedes rector-ship, she was closely in touch with the traditions of. THE, EXERCISES IN THE GROVE Dr. McVea, came home again. The names of Eliz-abeth Dancy Battle, Florence Stater, Kate Shipp, andImogen Stone, and many others of the old days wereon many lips during the day. Many of the daughtersof St. Marys turned home again for the celebrationfinding in the school many evidences of progress andnew life, but at the same time finding still in spite ofall the changes the old spirit of St. Marys, the dignityand simplicity and true spirit of worth. Historical Celebration The first anniversary event was the historical cele-bration in the auditorium Friday evening when ad-dresses were made by Dr. William S. Currell, presidentof the University of South Carolina, and Dr. EmilieMcVea, president of Sweet Briar College of Currell spoke on Marginal Lives, stressing thevalue and broadening effect of education. Dr. Aldert Smedes, the founder of St. Marys, and ofthe early days, and also equally in touch with the influ-ence
