The northern hemisphere of the Moon, a mosaic of 18 frames made by the Galileo spacecraft on 7 December 1992. The Earth-facing side of the Moon is at left. Major dark features at left are the Mare Imbrium basin (upper left), and Mare Serenitatis (below left centre) connected to Mare Tranquilitatis below. At bottom is the circular Mare Crisium, surrounded by bright highlands. The north pole of the Moon is about 1/3 of the way along the terminator from top left. The data for this image were gathered by the Galileo spacecraft during its second gravity-assist fly-by of the Earth. Galileo's final destination is the planet Jupiter.
