A noted *-* American general, born in England. He was educatedfor the army, and came to America when about twenty-sevenyears of age, with the British general, Braddock, at whose defeathe was badly wounded. At the close of the war he settled inVirginia; but when the Revolutionary War began, he joinedWashington. He received the surrender of Burgoyne atSaratoga, October 17, 1777. In 1780 he lost the battle ofCamden and was succeeded by General Greene. He died inNew canvas: H. 30 inches; W. 25 inches. Lent by Mr. Alexander Smit
