. Electric railway journal . A Self-Tightening CombinationPlain and Lock Nut The accompanying drawing shows the Roller locknut with the steel cover removed, this fitting in therecess in the nut face. The lock is a steel roller held inplace by a brass spring arm which is anchored at theouter part of the nut. The nut is spun on by hand, whereupon the small steel roller wedges into the thread-way and effects an absolute lock against any backwardmovement of the nut. This lock, however, permits thenut to go forward so that the effect of vibration is tocause the nut to creep up or along the bolt to a tighterseat. The lock nut is therefore not affected by thestretching of bolts since it takes up slack automatically. To remove this lock nut the application of strong wrench pressure is all that isrequired. In effecting thisremoval the roller bites deeperinto the threadway, enablingthe nut to turn slightly sothat the roller then drops intothe circular recess, thus al-lowing the nut to be spun offby hand. It will be observed. that only the threadway is self-tightening plainnicked, and the bolt thread it- and lock nut self is not injured in any way. This style of lock nut is not dependent on thread fric-tion and is longer lived than a gripping or friction locknut. It is a combination plain and lock nut in one unit, which combines the functions of a lock nut, a plain nut,a cotter pin and a spring washer, and it is no larger thanan ordinary nut. It was placed on the market at thetime of the 1916 convention of the American ElectricRailway Association by the Roller Lock Nut , New York City, and since that time it has beenused successfully by many railways.
