Pancreatic islet, illustration. In 1869 pancreatic islets or islets of Langerhans were discovered by German pathologist Paul Langerhans (1849-1888). Islets of Langerhans are small regions of the pancreas containing endocrine cells that produce several important hormones that are released straight into the blood stream. Alpha-cells (pink) secret glucagon and beta-cells (green) produce insulin (red) and amylin. Other cells of pancreatic islets produce ghrelin, pancreatic polypeptide and somatostatin.
