Another form of appliance, intended to accomplish thesame purpose and constructed of piano-wire and vulcanite, has been devised by Dr. Talbot, and is illustrated in and 119. In his description, he says: * A (vulcanite) plate is madeto fit the teeth and alveolar process, and cut away so that theanterior parts extend far enough forward to enclose theteeth to be moved. A piece of (piano) wire is bent intoeither of the forms shown in Fig. 119, wherein a is thecoil and fixed point, b b movable arms extending from a, and c c movable arms extending from b b. Grooves * Talbots Irregularities of the Teeth. P. 221, 2d 168 ORTHODONTIA. are cut into the anterior and posterior parts of the plate tocorrespond with and receive the points b b and c c. Talbots Appliance for Lateral Expansion. Talbot Springs. Holes are drilled at these points, and the wires tied to therubber plates. In order that the anterior teeth may bemoved with the greatest force, the arms are so adjusted thatthe greatest pressure is exerted on the anterior parts of theplates. This appliance is readily removed for cleansing, andreturned to place by the patient. Fig. 120. Prof. Goddard em- ploys the T a l,b o tspring for lateral ex-pansion, dispensingwith the rubber plateand using instead, band and bar attach-ments to the teeth, asshown in Fig. cut so fully illus-trates the appliancethat very little ex-planation is needed. Combination Appliance for Expansion. (Goddard.) The holcS in the bars on either side are for the reception of the coiled spring
