The birds are fed in order to protect the Fishing industry in Israel, which partakes in the supply of fish , usually birds are directed to a water reservoir in the Emek Hefer area not too distant from the fish ponds . They also find their way having been fed before . The meal is rationed so that they can absorb the food productively and regain strength as quickly as possible, usually within 3 to 5 days after which they leave for their next station. The flocks return north in the same manner and are again fed and strengthened on their return to Europe
