Similarly, at the hip-joint, a transverse amputation, whichis practically the first stage of an Esmarch amputation, often saves the situa-tion, v^^hile the mortality from disarticulation at the hip-joint is so great as tomake it almost unjustifiable; and at the shoulder, it can be used as the firststage of a shoulder-joint amputation, when immediate disarticulation wouldbe much more risky.
