Detail of the top of the front entrance to the Santa Maria Maddalena Church in the town of La Maddalena, Sardinia. There is a sundial and clock here to check the time. Statues are set in alcoves. One of these is Saint Luke. The picture shows the ornate architecture against a vivid blue summer sky. La Maddalena is the capital town of the island of the same name. Here you can explore the cobbled piazzas with their bustling cafes and shops or enjoy the waterfront. There is always a busy holiday atmosphere here where the only way of visiting is by boat. It is famous for its popular beaches of Spalmatore and Basa Trinita. The island is characterised by its rocky, granite landscape. It is connected to the nearby island of Caprera, famous as the birthplace of Giuseppe Garibaldi, by a wartime bridge.
