Gavin Maxwell memorial stone at Sandaig, Inverness-shire, marking site of 'Camusfearna' (house in Ring of Bright Water) destroyed by fire in 1968.

This boulder, dragged from the river, marks the site of 'Camusfearna' the Sandaig house rented by Gavin Maxwell and the setting for his book Ring of Bright Water. The house burned to the ground in 1968. There is a separate memorial beside the river to Edal, Maxwell's otter who died in the fire. Offerings of stones, seashells and bleached sticks surround the bronze plaque which reads: "Beneath this stone, the site of Camusfearna, are buried the ashes of Gavin Maxwell b. 15th July 1914 d. 7th September 1969". Looking SW, late on a 'soft' June evening, as the sun breaks through cloud over the hills of Skye including Beinn na Seamraig.
