Dennis Brothers was founded in 1895 by brothers John Cawsey and Herbert Raymond Dennis. They built the bicycles, initially from bought-in parts, and sold them from their shop in Guildford, Surrey. Their first commercial vehicle was a van for Harrods in London. Dennis made its first bus in 1903 and their first fire engine in 1908. The Pax chassis was introduced in 1952. The Co-operative Group (Co-op) has developed over the years from the merger of co-operative wholesale societies and many independent retail societies. Its roots can be traced back to the Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers, established in 1844. This Society was based on the Rochdale Principles – which notably introduced the idea of distributing a share of profits according to purchasers through a scheme which became known as the dividend or ‘Divi’. By 1872 many similar, individual societies joined up to form the 'Co-operative Wholesale Society' (CWS) and it was wholly owned by the co-operatives which traded with it.
