Lincolnshire Wolds UK hibernating snails on Beech tree

This extraordinary sight found among a small growth of mixed broad leafed trees in the Lincolnshire Wolds occurs annually towards the end of each year when the trees are devoid of foliage. About ten trees are selected in the small wood usually Beech and Sycamore where as many as 200 snails (Helix aspersa) cluster from 2mtrs to about 4 mtrs high up the trunk.
