Laugharne church, Carmarthenshire, Wales, UK: a C10th round-headed cross-slab found in the churchyard & placed in the E wall of the south transept.

A C10th cross-slab found in the churchyard & placed in the E wall of the S transept of Laugharne church, Carmarthenshire, Wales, UK. Round/oval head on a tapering shaft (stem), Latin cross with a central boss & spaces between arms filled with 'closed circuit' patterns. Interlacing knotwork runs up centre of stem to join cross, cable moulding runs around edges of shaft & head. Often described as a C9th or C10th Celtic cross influenced by Pictish &/or Viking art style motifs. The central interlace is reminiscent of decoration in the Lindisfarne Gospels & the triangular ornament between the cross arms may be triquetrae, symbols of the Holy Trinity. The cross was restored in memory of Sidney Edwards (1925-75) Sidesman & Chorister, Burgess of Laugharne & first Chairman of Laugharne Community Council.
