Light micrograph of a collection of Radiolaria, members of the shelled amoeboid protozoa. Radiolaria are usually marine & plantonic organisms, having an internal siliceous skeleton of complex & fantastic shapes. Around this is an external layer of highly vacuolated buoyant protoplasm from which radiate numerous fine pseudopodia (false feet). These are employed in the collection of food & serve as a locomotive mechanism. Magnification: x40 (35mm size).
