Orf virus particle. Negatively stained transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through an orf virus particle (virion). The orf virus is a natural pathogen of sheep. It is responsible for contagious pustular dermatitis, a disease mainly affecting sheep, cattle and goats, but is also transmissible to humans. Contagious pustular dermatitis in humans most commonly occurs in people in close contact with lambs. The lesions produced are usually painless, disappearing in about 5 weeks.
