. Automotive industries . ction of the crankshaft webs in-creases progressively from the pins to the axis of theshaft. The curved oil pipes secured to the webs carrythe oil from No. 1 to No. 2 throw on one side of thehaft, and from No. 3 to No. 4 throw on the other arrangement overcomes interference with oil flowdue to centrifugal action and it also obviates the neces-sity lor drilling the cheeks. The oil holes feeding theconnecting rod bearings are drilled on the inside sur-of the crankpins, so that the centrifugal forcewill cause the oil to pass over the entire surface of thebearing. It is claimed that when the oil hole is on theoutside of the crankpin, the oil is whirled directly out ofthe bearing and into the cylinder bores, where it ispicked up by the piston3 and much of it needlessly burnedor oxidized. This is said to be one of the factors tend-toward oil economy in these engines. The rear main bearing measures 2s \ :. ■> 16 in., thefront. 2« x 2 27 32 in. The bearings are of the babbitt-. Three-quarter rear view of powerplant lined, bronze back type, the specification for the liningmetal being 90 to 92 per cent tin, 4 to 5 per cent anti-mony, 4 to 5 per cent copper, and per cent maximumlead. The connecting rod bearings are 2% in. in diam-eter by 2 11/32 in. in length. High tungsten steel is used for the exhaust valvesand low tungsten for the inlet. These valves are tulipshaped, to reduce the resistance to gas flow. The valveshave 1 7/16 in. diameter heads and 9/32 in. diameterstems. The clear diameter of opening is 1 9/32 in. Rollercam followers are fitted to the valve tappets. Each valveis operated by an independent cam, this being made pos-sible by setting one block slightly forward of the other. Valve Details The valve springs have ten live coils and exert againstthe cams when the valve is closed a pressure of 66 lb.,which is sufficient to cause the valves to follow the camcontour at maximum speed. The valve springs are 63/64in. outsid
