Scornavacche greek archaeological site. Chiaramonte Gulfi, Ragusa. Sicily
The Scornavacche area is an important archaeological area from the VI BC It was home to a small village with parking facility along the Siracusa-Gela road. This town which unfortunately has not survived the name, suffered two destructive events, the first by the Carthaginians in 406 BC after the occupation of Akragas, as a result of this destruction the town was rebuilt in the archaic necropolis. The new town grew to 280 BC when it was destroyed by the Carthaginians always and never re-established. Nothing remains of the first settlement, while the second, excavations have brought to light a part of the town of the third century. with housing provided more environments surrounding a courtyard. The urban plan was made up of a series of parallel streets sandwiched by multiple narrow streets which lined rectangular blocks. two main zones have been found, a sacred and a potters' quarter; The production of ceramics in this village was quite important and the products were marketed not only with the neighboring city of Akrillai, but also with neighboring indigenous centers (Monte and Monte Castiglione Casasia). the discovery of an inscription on one of the excavations, testifies to the presence of a sacred area dedicated to Asclepius (god of healing). Following the excavation site was completely abandoned; lack both surveillance, a solid fence and adequate coverage to protect the excavation area have in fact ruined almost completely the structures of the town a readable time. To date only a few traces of crankcase walls emerge from the earth and undergrowth.
