Thisoperation fixes the mordant in the fibre and prevents it fromspreading to unmordanted parts of the cloth in thesubsequent washing and dyeing operations to which it issubjected. Immediately after the fly-dunging the goodsare washed and submitted to a second dunging, this timein a different kind of apparatus, through which they arepassed in a coil or loose rope form. They are thenthoroughly washed at a machine to remove the last tracesof thickening matter and all uncombined ingredients. Dyeing.—At this point the goods are ready for dyeing, the most important process in the whole series of The dye-beck or vat, one form of which is shownin longitudinal and transverse section in fig. 5, consists of. Fig. 5.—Sections of Dye iron cistern or trough A, into which the dyeing solutionia lEunning along the whole length of the 688 CALICO-PRINTIN G trough is a steam pipe 6, perforated at intervals, by whichthe requisite hcrt for the dyeing operation is raised andmaintained. Sloping upward from the steam pipe is aperforated diaphragm of iron or midfeather c, and mountedon a strong framework over the trough is the winch D,which by its revolutions, effected by spur wheels, keeps thecloth moving down and up continuously into and out ofthe trough. A peg rail e runs along the length of thetrough which keeps the pieces from becoming entangledin their course. The figure shows the course of a chain ofpieces being dyed on the endless system, in which abouttwenty-five pieces are sewn together, and passed in a spiralform up and down from end to end and back again, to goover the same course
