Bunion treatment. X-ray of the pinned foot of a 64 year old woman that has had a bunion (hallux vulgas) corrected by scarf and akin osteotomy surgery. Bunions are swellings of the joint between the big toe and the first metatarsal bone, which causes the base of the big toe to project outwards and the tip to point inwards. A scarf osteotomy is where the first metatarsal of the big toe (lower left) is cut, repositioned and screwed into place. Sometimes an akin osteotomy is also performed, where the next bone along (right) is also broken and reset.
