Portrait of Sir John Chardin (1643-1713), a jewel-merchant. He was born in Paris; and from 1664-70 and 1671-77, he travelled in the East, mainly in Persia, Turkey and India. After the Revokation of the Edict of Nantes, he settled in England. He became jeweller to the English Court, was knighted in 1681 and became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1682. He wrote about Persian astronomers and instrument makers.
