Green was the name given to new arrivals in America. They were called Greenhorns. In this poster for a play starring Boris Thomashevsky (1866-1939) star of the Yiddish Theatre, the new arrival holding ice tongs and a chunk of ice for the old refrigerators is lauded as the new wave of American rich despite barely speaking English.
